About this Event:
This interactive workshop gives participants the opportunity to deepen their interpretation of the goals of counseling and psychotherapy, as well as their skills and knowledge in this area.
The workshop is particularly geared towards humanistic or integrative counselors and psychotherapists: who are interested in understanding their clients as agentic and purpose-oriented, and are wary of more mechanistic or "results-oriented" goal-based approaches .
The workshop begins by introducing the philosophical concept of "directionality" - that human beings are always oriented towards future possibilities - and examines how this can be applied to understanding being. The workshop then explores what has been learned from psychological research about the nature of goals and the processes of goals (eg, the distinction between "approach" and "avoidance" goals). It then addresses a more realistic exploration of goalwork, including skills practices and video demonstrations, to point out when and how goal-oriented practices can be useful.
This online workshop will be taught through Zoom, and combines self-development exercises, theoretical contributions, and full group participation. The workshop is suitable for practicing and training counselors, psychotherapists, counseling psychologists, and other mental health professionals.
Participation in the workshop is through the payment of a fee chosen by yourself, and participants will have a CPD certificate to fill out. Our only "request" is that participants commit to attend throughout the day (from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, see schedule below) in order to have a constant community of participants throughout the day. .
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Detail the concept of "directionality" and be able to apply it to the understanding of their own psychological processes
- Discuss the theory and evidence that links "achieving goals" and types of goals, with well-being and psychological distress
- Apply basic goal-orientation practices in counseling and psychotherapy, including discussion and goal setting
- Use the objectives form appropriately
